What Berry is This?

A few weeks ago, I bought a bouquet of berries, but don't know what they are.  Do you?

They also came in another color, I believe red.  I liked the pink better.

Even when they get done, and turn into raisin-like berries, they're still attractive.

Eventually I put them together with some variegated Carnations.

The two of them lasted for around three weeks, money well spent.  I just wish I knew the name of the berry.  Can you help me out?

  1. Hi Janet,
I think they are Hypericum berries. Not a very grand name for such pretty berries.

  2. Thanks Chris - you are right. I looked at photographs and that's indeed what I bought: Hypericum androsaemum, commonly known as tutsan. I see that they're part of the St. John's Wort family, the leaves have medicinal properties but the berries are poisonous. Plus, it's considered invasive (sounds like Buckthorn) in New Zealand.

All very interesting - thanks for helping me out!
