Thanks Chris - you are right. I looked at photographs and that's indeed what I bought: Hypericum androsaemum, commonly known as tutsan. I see that they're part of the St. John's Wort family, the leaves have medicinal properties but the berries are poisonous. Plus, it's considered invasive (sounds like Buckthorn) in New Zealand.
